A working theory, after a few years of running this kind of shop and a few more watching agencies struggle with the same handful of problems:
The billable-hour culture is the wrong unit of value for performance marketing. It made sense when the deliverable was a media plan typed into Word and the strategist's time was the scarce input. The deliverable now is a managed account — Meta, Google, TikTok, Klaviyo, Shopify, all wired up — and the strategist's time is going almost entirely into things they shouldn't be touching with their hands.
The thing they shouldn't be touching is the report.
A reasonably busy agency runs ten clients. Each client expects, at minimum, a monthly performance report. A real report — not the auto-generated PDF Looker Studio extrudes, but the narrative report a senior strategist would write to their own boss. Numbers framed in context. The story of the month. The recommendation for next month. The sentence that says we know what we're doing.
The senior strategist on a 10-person agency spends about four hours per client per month writing that report. Four hours times ten clients is forty hours. That's one full week a month, every month, on assembly.
